Transfer news: Harry Redknapp still optimistic that QPR could sign Jermain Defoe on loan until MLS window opens

Despite many assuming Defoe's loan back to Spurs is a formality, the QPR boss is keen to have Defoe at Loftus Road

QPR manager Harry Redknapp remains optimistic of agreeing a short-term deal to take FC Toronto bound Jermain Defoe to Loftus Road, until the MLS transfer window official opens on 12th February.

Tottenham Hotspur confirmed the news this morning on their official Twitter account, ending weeks of speculation that the 31-year-old will cross the Atlantic in order to secure first team football.

Linking-up with his former teammate Ryan Nelson, who is now the head coach at Toronto, it is believed that Spurs will agree a deal to have Defoe back at White Hart Lane until the end of February.

The North American window officially opens on 12th February but Defore isn't expected to meet up with his new teammates until a fortnight later.

Redknapp, however, is keen for the England striker to help Rangers return to the Premier League at the first attempt - his side are four points behind leaders Leicester City.

He said: "We'd have him. We'd love to have him here, even if it was for only six weeks or so. He could come in and score you ten goals I'm sure, he's that good. He can do a job for anybody.

"It's a great opportunity for him, it's a great lifestyle out there. The lads that have gone over there - Robbie Keane, David Beckham, and everyone who's been out there (have done well). I was fortunate to go out there in the 1970s when I was playing, it's a great country and great place to be. I'm sure he'll love it."

Upon the move, Defoe said: "Everybody knows how much this Club means to me and I will play my heart out for the team and the fans until my last kick for the Club.

"I have had a fantastic time here and the fans have always been amazing to me.

"I am grateful for the opportunity for myself and my family to experience living overseas and for me to play in the MLS with a contract that will take me to the age of 35. I have no doubt I shall be coming back as a fan supporting the team in the years to come too."
