Despite having the 'best squad in the Premier League', to echo many of his domestic colleagues, Manuel Pellegrini's Manchester City have spent much of the opening exchanges chasing the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool.

If they are to overhaul the gap, currently at just a solitary point, they may need to dip into the market this January.

Over the course of the season, the Chilean manager has tinkered with his goalkeeping options. Seemingly still to chose between Joe Hart and Costel Pantilimon, rumours are rumbling in the football world that a new keeper could be arriving soon.

It goes without saying that City tend to struggle whenever Vincent Kompany is ruled out though injury, like he was in November, and the City management staff may decide that the time is right to bring in another world class central defender.

With the likes of Mats Hummels and Pepe being touted as possible acquisitions, it looks as though some serious money will have to be spent.

One area where the Citizens don't really need more options is in attack, but the midfielders behind sometimes look like they could do with a rest. Sami Khedira, Julian Draxler and Daniele De Rossi have all be linked but City's pragmatic manager likes to keep his cards close to his chest.
