Victor Valdes has hit back at Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal after the Dutchman launched a scathing attack on the goalkeeper for allegedly refusing to play for the reserves last season.

Van Gaal has put Valdes up for sale after insisting that he does not fit the “philosophy” that he has implemented at United. His reasoning behind the decision was that Valdes apparently refused to play for the Under-21 side when he was playing second fiddle to No 1 goalkeeper David De Gea.

Valdes eventually made his first-team debut in the penultimate game of the season, when he came off the bench after De Gea picked up an injury during the 1-1 draw with Arsenal, and he would start the final match in the 0-0 draw with Hull.

However, after Van Gaal revealed that Valdes would be sold during a press conference in the United States where United are on tour, Valdes has taken to his Twitter account to question Van Gaal’s words.

Valdes posted the images of three Under-21 games that he played in last season against Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham – as well as a picture of himself and members of the reserve side including Anderson, Jesse Lingard, Joel Castro Pereira, Andreas Pereira and Ashley Fletcher – along with a question mark and the hash-tag ‘respect’.

Van Gaal prompted the response by claiming Valdes has no future at Old Trafford, having proven to be a “big disappointment since he signed an 18-month contract in January this year.

"He doesn't follow my philosophy. There is no place for someone like that," said Van Gaal.

"There is not one place for one player – the philosophy is how you play football and how you maintain your match rhythm. For example, he refused last year to play in our second team.

“That is one aspect of our philosophy but there are a lot of others for how you play like a goalkeeper for Manchester United. When you are not willing to follow the principles of the philosophy there is only one way and that is out.

“For us it is a big disappointment. We thought he will follow our philosophy but it is a pity because we have given him an opportunity to rehabilitate and then we gave him a contract. Then when he is fit to play and when you are not playing in the first selection [team] you have to play in the second. He refused that.”
