French champions Paris Saint-Germain are still interested in a blockbuster deal for Manchester United star Wayne Rooney, according to a report in France.

Le Parisien reporter Laurent Perrin has suggested the the Ligue 1 club discussed a swap deal for Rooney with Edinson Cavani, with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi an admirer of the England man.

Even though Manchester United have been previously linked with a move for Cavani, Rooney is at the centre of new boss Louis van Gaal’s plans next season.

The 28-year-old has been excellent in pre-season and is likely to be handed the captain’s armband for the Premier League curtain raiser against Swansea on Saturday lunchtime; the England man also signed a new deal at Old Trafford in February.

"We [PSG] discussed a trade with Rooney,” wrote Perrin.

"The only problem was that you can never play Rooney on the right as you do with [Edinson] Cavani.

"So either we change the system, but, Laurent Blanc actually doesn’t want either of them on the right and prefers Lucas."
