It may be that West Ham's ownership is settled over the remaining days of December and the club enter the transfer window with some new cash in their back pocket. Or it may be that they have to sell off some of their more valuable assets (Robert Green, Matthew Upson...) and fill in the gaps. Or it may be that they just need an injection of quality and steel to help get them out of the relegation mire.
Whichever the way, they need to spend this January, the consequences of slipping out of the Premier League would be too catastrophic for the club to consider otherwise.
And it may just be that these on some of the names on manager Gianfranco Zola's shopping list - not all, as they are mostly strikers, but Zola needs firepower, and quickly.
