Newcastle want to sign the Wigan midfielder James McCarthy, ahead of competition from Everton after agreeing a fee that could reach £8.7m for Bafetimbi Gomis.

The Lyons forward will become a Newcastle player if agent's fees and add-ons in the deal can be finalised. Newcastle have also made an approach for the Republic of Ireland international McCarthy as they prepare for the possibility of losing their vice-captain Yohan Cabaye to Paris Saint-Germain.

Wigan want around £20m for the 22-year-old McCarthy. That is out of both Everton and Newcastle's budget, but both clubs believe he can be signed for significantly less. McCarthy is also said to be open to the possibility of moving to St James' Park following Wigan's relegation to the Championship. McCarthy did not miss a Premier League game for his side last season.

Jean-Michel Aulas, the Lyons president, confirmed a fee had been agreed with Newcastle for Gomis. "We have accepted the proposal of Newcastle, which is €8m, plus €2m bonus," he said. "The agreement is now linked to the acceptance of agent's fees. "
