England and USA fans prepare for semi-final

England have been knocked out of the Women’s World Cup, losing 2-1 against the USA in a dramatic semi-final in Lyon.

Steph Houghton had the chance to take the game to extra time, but missed a late penalty after a lengthy stoppage for a VAR check after Ellen White was fouled in the area.

The USA continued their record of scoring within the first 12 minutes of each game in this tournament when Christen Press, who was starting in place of Megan Rapinoe, scored the opening goal after being left free to head in at the back post.

England grew into the game and were back on level terms when White fired in her fifth goal of the tournament, taking her past Gary Lineker’s record of four consecutive goals in a World Cup.

While England were improving, the USA were by no means letting this one slip and quickly restored their lead through Alex Morgan, who joins White as the tournament’s leading scorers on six goals.

England thought they back on level terms when White was celebrating her second goal, but a VAR review confirmed she was offside by the finest or margins before she charged down on goal and slotted it in.

Phil Neville’s side were then handed a lifeline of their own through VAR, a penalty in the 83rd minute after Becky Sauerbrunn clipped White’s heels in front of goal. Hughton stepped up after Parris had missed two previous penalties, but the captain’s tame effort was easily saved.

England ended the game with 10 players after Millie Bright was given a second yellow card and sent off for a late lunge.
