England World Cup squad: Gareth Southgate names 23-man list including uncapped Trent Alexander-Arnold

Southgate has left out veteran goalkeeper Joe Hart as well as Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere

Gareth Southgate has announced a young England squad that he hopes can win the 2018 World Cup in Russia this summer.

The rookie international manager, who took over after Sam Allardyce was caught up in a newspaper 'sting' operation in September 2016, has picked a young-looking squad inspired by his work with England's Under-21s and the success of youth teams.

Former Three Lions keeper Joe Hart missed the cut, with Jordan Pickford, Jack Butland and Nick Pope preferred. The trio have just nine England caps between them.

Uncapped Trent Alexander-Arnold was also called up after an excellent season with Liverpool in which the teenaged defender became the club's first-choice right-back, helping them to a Champions League final.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, a favourite of Southgate from his time as Under-21 coach, is also heading to Russia after an impressive season on loan at Crystal Palace.

It wasn't all young bucks though, with veteran Chelsea defender Gary Cahill included to add some experience to his backline.
