Uruguay vs England World Cup 2014: Don't worry, England could still reach the second round...

England's defeat to Uruguay tonight leaves their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread although does not technically see them knocked out of the tournament.

The Three Lions performed admirably in their first match in Brazil, yet suffered a 2-1 defeat to Italy on Saturday night in Manaus, meaning that they needed to avoid defeat at all costs in Thursday’s showdown against Uruguay and in all likelihood win their remaining match against Costa Rica if they wanted to reach the second round.

Victory on Thursday would have eliminated Uruguay from the World Cup – but Luis Suarez ensured that was not the case for Oscar Tabarez's men.

England now stand on zero points from two matches, with all three of the remaining teams in their group on three points - Italy and Costa Rica only having played once.

For England to remain in the competition they need Italy to win both their remaining matches against first Costa Rica and then Uruguay.

Should either Costa Rica or Uruguay manage a win or even a draw in their remaining games then England are out - England obviously needing a win against Costa Rica in their final game.

However even that set of results may not prove enough for England to progress as their goal difference is currently four behind Costa Rica - something they would need to overturn if they have any hope of making the next round.

England play Costa Rica in their final game next Tuesday although will have all eyes on the Central American's game with Italy tomorrow afternoon. If Italy beat Costa Rica 2-0, and England replicate the same scoreline with the Italians seeing off Suarez and Co, England won't be flying home just yet.

Qualification would see the Three Lions meet the winner of Group C, which at present looks likely to be unbeaten Colombia after their 2-1 win over Ivory Coast in the hours before England's defeat.
