Mark Foster's second successive English Amateur victory sends him into next month's Walker Cup match against America at Porthcawl in fine spirits. However, the failures of Craig Evans and Hugh McKibbin to keep their national crowns could cost them a place in the match.
While Foster easily overcame Woburn's Sam Jarman six and five at Hunstanton to complete the first successful defence of the English crown since Harry Ashby in 1973, Evans lost three and two to Garry Houston at Harlech and McKibbin lost eight and seven to Simon Mackenzie at Southerness.
Eight of the team, including Foster, have already been chosen, with the final two spots being filled in a fortnight's time after the British Mid-Amateur Championship at Sunningdale.
