Pippa Funnell retained the lead that she had held since the opening dressage phase of the Windsor Horse Trials to win the international section for the second year running. She could afford two mistakes with Marshlands Rubio in yesterday's final show jumping, but the grey horse dislodged only one rail.

Funnell won by a margin of 5.4pts, defeating Ireland's Sam Moore on Culnagrew, with 23-year-old Jeanette Brakewell third on Rain Dancer. This was Brakewell's best result to date and she had the added satisfaction of standing one place ahead of the Australian Olympic champion, Matt Ryan, on Kibah Sandstone.

Funnell rode two superb clear rounds over the cross-country course on Saturday, but both her horses made a single show jumping error yesterday at the ninth obstacle. Rainbow Magic, whom she rode first, dropped from third to sixth as a result.

Jonquil Hemming, a full-time riding instructor at Stonar School, near Bath, gave her pupils a lesson in effective riding when winning the National Section on Positive Rain. Stowe School provided a winner in Tom Robinson, who was given time off from his A-level studies there to ride California Boy to victory in the British Junior Championship.

Robinson had 10.4pts in hand over Kate Brown, who is sitting her A-levels on 3 June. Brown had a freak accident two years ago, when the horse she was riding slipped up on a wet road, leaving her with a fractured skull and broken neck.
