American Football: Miami open with victory as Williams runs riot
The new signing Ricky Williams ran for 111 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries as the Miami Dolphins posted their 11th straight season-opening victory, routing the Detroit Lions 49-21.
The former New Orleans player opened the scoring with three minutes and seven seconds left in the first quarter when he took a hand-off from Jay Fiedler and went over the top for a one-yard touchdown. He added to the rout in the third when he ran for a two-yard score.
Peyton Manning threw for three touchdowns, including two to the off-season acquisition Qadry Ismail, to help make Tony Dungy a winner in his first game as coach of Indianapolis, the Colts enjoying a 28-25 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Marty Schottenheimer's first game as San Diego Chargers coach could not have gone better as he saw his side beat the Cincinnati Bengals 34-6. LaDainian Tomlinson was at the heart of the Chargers' offensive, rushing for 93 yards and a touchdown, while Drew Brees completed 15 of 19 passes for 160 yards and two scores.
John Fox's debut as Carolina's coach was also successful, with the Panthers posting a narrow 10-7 win over the Baltimore Ravens.
