Usain Bolt hurt in Jamaican car crash

World record sprinter Usain Bolt of Jamaica suffered minor injuries yesterday when he crashed his BMW sports car on the outskirts of his Caribbean homeland's capital, authorities said.

The 22-year-old 100 and 200 metres Olympic champion lost control of the high-powered vehicle and plowed into a ditch on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

He was treated in hospital along with his brother and a female companion after injuring his left foot as he stepped out of the car, but was later released, his manager Norman Peart said in a statement.

"We are keeping a close watch on Usain and will update the public as is necessary," he said.

The injury may see Bolt miss an invitational athletics meeting in Kingston on Saturday. The sprinter is also slated to run in a 150 metres street race in Manchester, on 17 May.

"We will see how he is in the next few days before Coach (Glen) Mills will decide if he is able to run on Saturday," Bolt's agent Ricky Simms told Reuters in an email.
