Boxing: English youngsters win gold for first time
In the previous three World Championships no English boxer had ever reached a semi-final, but last night at the St George's Hall the English team finished second to the Cuban squad in the final standings.
At under 46 kilos Michael Hadfield was trailing after one round but looked unfortunate not to receive the verdict at the end of three rounds against Sattibayev Olzhas of Kazakhstan.
In the next bout, Khalid Saeed Yafai overcame America's Luis Yanez to win the gold at under 48 kilos by a margin of 28 to 19 points. It was a flawless performance by the 16-year-old.
At under 70 kilos, England captain Anthony Agogo started as a firm underdog against Russia's Ruslan Derbenev, but after three rounds Agogo had upset the odds and England had another gold medal.
Five members of the England senior squad will travel to China next month for their World Championships.
