Boxing: Magee's emphatic win upstages Calzaghe

Brian Magee put one over on Joe Calzaghe by knocking down Miguel Jiminez on his way to a unanimous points verdict in the defence of his International Boxing Organisation super-middleweight title in Huddersfield on Saturday.

Jiminez had pushed Calzaghe in the Welshman's points victory last August, but Magee decked him with a straight left hand in the first 30 seconds of the contest and the overall manner of his victory was more emphatic.

The Belfast southpaw was in total command from the start though he suffered a cut above his left eye in the seventh round and was briefly unsettled by a clash of heads which drew blood from his nose in round eight.

Jiminez, who has never been stopped in his career, was himself cut above his left eye in the middle rounds and performed almost as negatively as he had against the Welshman. Much of the American's reluctance to get involved because of Magee's precision, particularly with his left hand, which earned him a 120-108, 120-108, 120-107 win on the judges' scorecards.

It was the unbeaten Magee's 18th successive victory and his calculated approach to an untidy contest made up for his lethargic defence against Jose Spearman in his previous fight.

"I needed to bring it on a bit more after my last fight and I think I managed to do that," said Magee.
