Peter Manley was knocked out of the PDC World Championships last night by Australian wild card qualifier Simon Whitlock. The 34-year-old from Brisbane produced the first major shock of the competition as he conjured up a magical performance to win the second-round match 4-1 and leave last year's runner-up and current world No 6 shellshocked.

Whitlock, who only qualified by virtue of winning the Oceanic Masters, said: "That was a big highlight in my career. The last four months I've won four big tournaments in Australia and just being here is absolutely fantastic. I never ever thought I'd be here."

Colin Lloyd, the seventh seed, squeezed into the third round at Purfleet following a tremendous battle with the former world champion, Bob Anderson. The 55-year-old from Somerset rediscovered some of his best form, but last year's semi-finalist, from Witham in Essex, prevailed in a thrilling final set to seal his place in the last 16 with a 4-3 victory.

The third seed Ronnie Baxter enjoyed a much easier second-round tie, defeating Mick Manning 4-1, and will play Kevin Painter on Thursday after the 14th seed overcame 57-year-old Reg Harding 4-1.

Chris Mason also reached the last 16 last night with a 4-2 victory over Andy Jenkins. He won the first set comfortably, but Jenkins then took the next two only for the Bristolian to level the match by winning the fourth. Mason checked out on 106 in the first leg of set five and went on to win with a brilliant final leg before taking the sixth set in straight legs.
