England were defeated 3-1 by Argentina in the semi-finals of the Junior World Cup in Hobart yesterday and now face Germany tomorrow for the bronze medal.

The Germans were narrowly beaten 3-2 by India, who will now appear in their second successive final, while Scotland, who overcame Canada 3-0, will play Ireland for the 13th and 14th spot.

England had gone behind to an 13th minute opportunist goal from Matias Paredes but equalised four minutes later with a fine drag-flick at a penalty corner from Richard Mantell. England goalkeeper Dave Carter pulled off a series of impressive second-half saves but Marcelo del Negro's solo effort and Alejandro Pasquali's late strike secured victory.

Jon Royce, Britain's women's chief coach at the Sydney Olympics, was yesterday appointed director of coaching at Surbiton.
