Lynn Davies became the new president of UK Athletics yesterday and promised to help the sport build on "a golden opportunity". Davies, the Welshman nicknamed "Lynn The Leap" for his exploits in the long jump, was voted in by the clubs in the country's athletic system to replace David Hemery, who was ineligible to stand again after two successive two-year terms in the honorary post.

Davies received 102 votes more than Frank Clement, the former 1500m British record holder. Davies said: "I am delighted to be elected to this very important position within UK Athletics at a time when I believe that the sport is facing a golden opportunity to move forward.

"We have some very talented young athletes moving through into the senior ranks and this, combined with a promise of a £41m Government investment in the sport, means that the future looks bright."
