Canada waited for 10 agonising minutes for Anson Carter's sudden victory overtime goal to be validated in a video replay before being able to celebrate their 3-2 victory over Sweden in Helsinki yesterday and their first World Championship title in six years.
Canada were celebrating after Carter swooped in from behind the net to slip the puck under Mikael Tellqvist's pad for the winner. But the referee stopped play as it was unclear whether the puck had completely crossed the goal line, or whether it had been trapped under the netminder's pad.
There followed an awkward wait before the goal was allowed and the Olympic champions could celebrate another feather in their caps.
