Injured Walsh faces six weeks on sidelines

Ruby Walsh, the champion jumps jockey of Ireland, will be out of action for at least six weeks after having his dislocated left hip manipulated back into place following a fall at Listowel on Monday. It was originally thought that Walsh, 22, had broken his left femur.

Jennifer Walsh, the jockey's sister and agent, said: "He's reasonably comfortable but we won't know until the surgeon sees him the extent of the recuperation period. Thankfully it's not as bad as it seemed yesterday evening."

Barry Geraghty joined Walsh in Tralee General Hospital yesterday after a heavy fall at Listowel. He was riding Diaz for Tom Taaffe in the Lartigue Hurdle when the four-year-old fell four out when lying in third place. The jockey appeared to be kicked by another horse and he was immediately taken to hospital with a suspected broken collar-bone. Geraghty is in second place behind Paul Carberry in the Irish jockeys' title race on the 28-winner mark.

Richard Quinn gave up his two rides at Beverley yesterday after feeling unwell. "He just thought it better not to ride," his agent, Robert Parsons, said. Quinn, who is third in the Flat jockeys' championship with 110 winners to Kieren Fallon's 144, is expected to be fit for his four rides at Goodwood today.
