Jon Jones: UFC champion released on bail after alleged 'hit-and-run' incident left pregnant woman with a broken arm

Police reported that a pipe and marijuana were found in a rental car along with documents with Jones’ name on

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has been released by police on a $2,500 bail after witnesses reported him allegedly leaving the scene of an incident which left a pregnant woman with a broken arm.

Police were seeking to speak to the mixed martial arts competitor before he handed himself in, according to the Albuquerque Police Department. The 27-year-old is alleged to run a red light on Sunday morning when he hit a car being driven by Vanessa Sonnenberg, with a third car reportedly involved as well.

Witnesses claimed that Jones ran from the crash, but immediately came back to take “a large handful of cash” from the car before leaving again.

A police report read: “Witnesses stated he shoved the cash into his pants and ran north jumping the fence.”

Police confirmed that they found a pipe with marijuana in the rented SUV as well as MMA and rental car documents that were in Jones’ name, and after seeking an arrest warrant on Monday, Jones turned himself into the Albuquerque Police Department where he was held at Bernalillo County Metro Detention Center.

An off-duty police officer, who also happened to be a UFC fan, recognised the pound-for-pound king of the Octagon, and he is quoted in the warrant as saying: “I watch UFC all the time, I know what Jon Jones looks like.”

According to the warrant, Sonnenberg told authorities: “I am pregnant and I feel like I am going to pass out. My arm is hurting all the way up and my husband is going to take me to the hospital.”

Sonnenberg had her arm placed in a sling after the accident and was due to have a cast put on it today.

Jones, who holds a 21-1 record as a UFC fighter, is scheduled to defend his light heavyweight title against Anthony 'Rumble'Johnson at UFC 187 in Las Vegas on 23 May. The UFC has issued a statement to acknowledge Jones’ arrest, and added that they will not issue any further comment until more information becomes available.

“We are aware that the Albuquerque Police Department is interested in speaking to Jon Jones regarding his possible involvement in a motor vehicle accident,” the statement read.

“We are in the process of gathering facts and will reserve further comment until more information is available.”

The Independent have contacted Jones' agent Malki Kawa and are awaiting a response.
