105,591 ice hockey fans see Toronto Maple Leafs beat Detroit Red Wings in 2014 NHL Winter Classic

The open air Michigan Stadium was packed for the New Year's Day game, despite the conditions

Over 100,000 ice hockey fans got the new year off to a record breaking start in Michigan yesterday.

A total of 105,591 packed into the Michigan Stadium to watch the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Detroit Red Wings in the 2014 NHL Winter Classic.

The annual game is synonymous with freezing weather and falling snow, and this year didn't disappoint with skaters with shovels regularly coming on to clear the white stuff.

The showcase match turned out to be a thriller for all those in attendance at the open air stadium.

Daniel Alfredsson and James van Reimsdyk scored second-period goals to make the score 1-1 before Tyler Bozak and Justin Abdelkader traded third period goals to keep the score level.

Overtime couldn't produce a winner meaning a shoot-out was required. Bozak scored the game-winner for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
