Cycling: Bradley Wiggins helps fund British-based women's team which includes Laura Trott
Bradley Wiggins is to help fund a new British-based women’s team that will include some of the country’s best young riders, including double Olympic gold medallist Laura Trott.
The Olympic and Tour de France champion has delivered on his promise to try and boost women’s cycling by supporting the Dream Team Honda Pro Cycling Team. The new teams’ line up was announced this morning and contains three riders who won gold on the track for Britain at London 2012.
Trott will be joined by her team pursuit team-mates from the Olympics, Dani King and Joanna Rowsell, as well as two of Britain’s most talented youngsters, Elinor Barker, the junior world champion, and Amy Roberts. The line-up is boosted by some more experienced road riders, including the Italian world champion Giorgia Bronzini, and will be led by Australia’s Commonwealth champion Rochelle Gilmore.
The team will compete in the classics but be based in the UK and are currently in negotiations with a “global company” also based in this country over naming rights. The long-term plan is to see DTPC become the female equivalent of Team Sky.
Trott said: “I’m looking forward to being part of what I believe will be one of the most professional and most successful teams. I’m looking forward to gaining more experience on the road with such a great team next year.”
On the role of Wiggins in relation to the team, a statement from DTPC read: "The team is also privileged to have the personal backing of British cycling legend Bradley Wiggins CBE through the Wiggo Foundation.
"Wiggins' provision of generous support, assistance and encouragement will further enable the girls to fulfil their potential out on the road."
