The Belgian Greg van Avermaet timed his move to perfection to clinch the Paris-Tours cycling classic yesterday, as Mark Cavendish failed to play much of a part in his first race in the world champion's rainbow jersey.
BMC rider Van Avermaet jumped from a breakaway group with less than 20 kilometres left and was joined by Italian Marco Marcato, whom he easily beat in the final sprint to clinch the greatest win of his career.
"In the breakaway group, I was one of the fastest riders so it was not easy to attack," Van Avermaet said. "I had to wait a little."
