Bart De Clercq hung on to win the seventh stage of the Giro d'Italia yesterday and dedicated the victory to his late Belgian compatriot, Wouter Weylandt.
"During the race I tried not to think about Wouter," De Clercq said. "But now I've won it I want to dedicate this to Wouter Weylandt and his family."
Weylandt died on Monday after a heavy crash. Lotto-Omega rider De Clercq attacked on the final climb to Montevergine di Mercogliano with six miles remaining and finished in a time of 2hr 54min 47sec.
