Italy's Francesco Gavazzi was declared the winner of the fifth stage of the Tour of the Basque Country yesterday after Spain's Oscar Freire was relegated from first place.

Triple world champion Freire won a bunch sprint at Zalla but race judges later relegated him and awarded second-placed Gavazzi victory. No reason was given for their decision.
