Philippe Gilbert of Belgium claimed victory on the third stage of the Vuelta a España yesterday to take the leader's red jersey from Mark Cavendish.

Gilbert overhauled a late solo breakaway by the Spaniard Serafin Martinez to win the 157.3km (98-mile) stage from Marbella to Malaga in 4hr 6min 12sec.

Having passed Martinez, Omega Pharma-Lotto rider Gilbert held off the late challenge of Joaquin Rodriguez over the final kilometre to finish three seconds ahead of the Spaniard in second. Third went to Igor Anton, also from Spain.
