Andrea Guardini edged out Britain's Mark Cavendish in a bunch sprint to win the 18th stage of the Giro d'Italia yesterday as Spain's Joaquin Rodriguez kept his grip on the overall lead.

Itay's Guardini timed his sprint to perfection to win in 3hr 0min 52sec over the mainly flat 149km (93-mile) route from San Vito di Cadore to Vedelago.
