Olympic veteran Chris Newton has been appointed coach of Great Britain's women's road squad, in addition to his role with the men's endurance academy, with the task of pulling the team together as it prepares to defend the gold won by Nicole Cooke in 2008. Newton, a winner of three medals over four Olympics, will need to ensure there is no fallout from the spat at the World Championships, when team leader Lizzie Armitstead accused Cooke of riding "for herself".
