Vincenzo Nibali retained the lead in the Tour of Spain as Peter Velits won yesterday's individual time trial in Penafiel, his first stage win of the season. Velits, from Slovakia, was 12 seconds quicker than nearest challenger Denis Menchov and now lies third overall.

In the Tour of Britain, Michael Albasini maintained his one-minute, 28-second advantage over the rest of the field after stage five saw Marco Frapporti nudge Britain's Bradley Wiggins into second place on the day. Frapporti and Wiggins were two of a breakaway group of seven who sped towards Glastonbury, but the Italian went clear in the final few miles.
