Three writers from The Independent were short-listed in last night's British Sports Books Awards at the Savoy hotel. Neil Clack and Steve Bunce were short-listed in the best new writer category for Animals and The Fixer respectively, while David Tremayne's Jochen Rindt was short-listed for best illustrated title.
Columnist Neil Warnock presented the award for the best football book, won by Anthony Clavane for Promised Land. The cricket book of the year, Harry Pearson's Slipless in Settle, was chosen by a panel chaired by Stephen Brenkley, this newspaper's cricket correspondent.
