Today the Spaniard, who has become as French as riots over gay marriage, bids for an astonishing eighth title. There to stop him is David Ferrer, who has made a career of living in his shadow. In motor racing, history suggests that if Lewis Hamilton finishes the Canadian Grand Prix he will win it. Simple as that.

Tomorrow

You may be of the opinion that you have heard quite enough of Jose Mourinho already. But today it will be impossible to miss him as he gives his first press conference (since the last time) as Chelsea manager. On and on he will gush about how the British footballing public love and respect him, when what he really means is that Chelsea supporters and journalists keen for a quote liked his style. Will they fall for it again? And can he prove that Mourinho The Sequel will be even more dazzling than the original? Those seeking to dodge the flashbulbs in west London should catch some tennis at Queen's (sorry, the Aegon Championships), where Andy Murray will be hoping to prove his fitness.

Tuesday

The Lions are starting to roar in Australia and today they are in Newcastle, New South Wales, to face the Newcastle-Queensland Country XV. In football, England Under-21s play Israel in Jerusalem, while India and West Indies should ensure a bumper crowd to watch the latest Champions Trophy set-to at The Oval.

Wednesday

And so on to Edgbaston, where Australia and New Zealand clash in England's Champions Trophy group.

Thursday

There's no doubt where interest will be centred in the opening round of the US Open golf in Pennsylvania. At 1.14pm the world's top three, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott, tee off as the must-watch trio. In the cricket, England play the Sri Lankans at The Oval.

Friday

Much has been made of Australia's Pakistan-born leg spinner Fawad Ahmed, who could be fast-tracked into the Ashes team. Today he may make his debut for Australia A against Ireland in Belfast.

Saturday

Super Saturday for egg-chasers: the Lions, England, Wales, Scotland, Italy, France and the All Blacks all play.
