This weekend ten couples took part in a 'Wife carrying' race at Hereford Racecourse in a British re-invention of the historical Finnish sport.

The winners, Oliver Milligan and Christina Davies, won their combined weight of 24 stones in beer as a prize. Presumably both of them will need to be carried home after that lot.

The weird sport of wife carrying is just one of many sporting customs to raise an eyebrow or two. Here we look at ten of the most peculiar sports around the world - although perhaps tellingly a lot of them take place in the UK.
