Racing: Bad draw fails to halt Egan's comeback win

John Egan has had his problems this winter but was all smiles here yesterday after guiding home his first winner since a crashing fall at Wolverhampton more than seven weeks ago.

Egan, who will be sentenced next month for offences including the illegal possession of a firearm, hit the front inside the final two furlongs of the one-mile handicap on 16-1 chance Spot The Subbie.

Jamie Poulton's gelding went on to beat Roman Boy by three lengths. Egan said: "Two months is a long time to be off. He did well to win from stall one as they usually get beaten drawn out there, as they get pushed wide."

Shane Kelly produced debutant Tendalay (13-8) inside the final furlong to win Kempton's second race. Winning trainer Jamie Osborne said: "He's by Red Ransom and there's a lot of dirt in the pedigree - he's suitable for US racing and he'll probably go there now."
