Racing: Kris Kin's Derby decision delayed

A decision on the participation of Kris Kin in the Irish Derby will be left as late as possible. A spokeswoman for his trainer, Sir Michael Stoute, said yesterday that consultations over ground conditions would be made with the Curragh this morning and a decision taken before the noon deadline for supplementary entries.

The colt's owner, Saeed Suhail, forked out £90,000 to add the Kris S colt to the field for the Derby and reaped a handsome dividend as he powered home for a one-length success from The Great Gatsby. A run in the Curragh showpiece will cost an additional £66,000.

Ground conditions at the Curragh are described as good to firm, good in the straight. "The forecast is for a dry week," the racecourse manager, Paul Hensey, said. "We'll monitor it very closely but I think today we will put some water on the round course on some parts of the track that tend to get particularly fast.

"We'll keep a close eye on the weather forecast and make a decision on further watering later in the week. Our plan would be to water to keep the ground safe and to ensure there is good to firm ground. We wouldn't be watering to alter the ground."
