In a thrilling European Cup final Reading twice came from behind to lead the hosts Atletic Terrassa 3-2 before finally conceding two late goals.

The large, capacity crowd, basking in the glorious Spanish sunshine, were given plenty to shout about as both teams played fast, attacking hockey.

The Spanish took the lead through Xavi Ribas at their first penalty corner in the second minute. Jon Wyatt equalised for Reading in the 19th minute but early into the second half the Spanish were ahead again, Pep Sanchez scoring the first of his two goals.

A quickly taken free hit in the 47th minute by Mark Pearn to Howard Hoskin earned Reading a penalty corner at which Pearn equalised. Taking advantage of the Spanish team being reduced to 10 men, Hoskin put Reading ahead in the 51st minute after Ben Barnes had run 40 yards with the ball through the defence.

Oriol Felix equalised for Atletic from their ninth penalty corner, and Sanchez sealed victory for Atletic with his second for the winning goal four minutes from time.
