Rowing: Lucerne winner Campbell aiming to add world title

Alan Campbell, who won the single sculls World Cup at Lucerne last Sunday, will be seeking to add the world title to his record after being named among the 13 crews and scullers for August's World Championships at Eton.

Also named yesterday were the men's coxless four and women's quadruple scullers. Several other crews are to be announced after further trials, including a men's eight and coxed four composed from 12 men listed yesterday.

Campbell finished fourth in his final in Switzerland at the weekend, but won the World Cup overall title thanks to his previous results. After his race, he made a bold prediction, saying: "I'm now going to go for the World Championship and I'm going to win it."

This is the first time for 20 years that the full World Championship programme will be held in Britain, during which time British rowing has scaled the international peaks. All the crews who made a mark at Lucerne regatta last weekend are named, including the male and female double scullers, Matt Wells and Steve Rowbotham and Annie Vernon and Anna Bebington, the men's pair, Colin Smith and Tom James, the lightweight men's four, and 20-year-old Zac Purchase in the lightweight single scull.

"Being at home is a massive deal for us," said Steve Williams, the Athens Olympic champion in the No 3 seat of the coxless four. "We expect thousands to come and watch and expect us to deliver the goods."

Elise Laverick, stroke of the women's eight, said: "We want to be the best eight this country has ever seen."
