Adamson aggravates facial injuries in final

Matt Adamson will not play for another month after defying his jaw and cheekbone fractures to appear in the Challenge Cup final at Cardiff on Saturday. The Australian second-rower played for Leeds in their defeat by Bradford just two weeks after suffering the damage. "He went the following day to see the surgeon who performed the original operation and he will not play again for at least four weeks," a club spokesman said.

Leeds have sent in an official letter of complaint to the Rugby League over Russell Smith's refereeing of the match, but the Rugby League says it does not intend to respond publically.

The prospects of taking the final back to Cardiff next year will not be assessed until a new television contract covering the competition has been negotiated.

"We were very impressed with Cardiff and Cardiff was very impressed with us," John Huxley, the League's spokesman, said. The League acknowledges, however, that there were horror stories involving travel and accommodation – although problems with the price and availability of rooms should ease next year with several thousand more coming on-stream.

The former Castleford and Great Britain prop, Dean Sampson, is considering a playing comeback at the age of 35. Sampson has been in discussions with Wakefield about joining them on a contract for the rest of this season, with the possibility of a coaching role to follow.

Hull hope to have their new Australian hooker, Dean Treister, in their side for their match at Castleford next Monday. Treister is the second unsettled player from Cronulla to join a British club in the last week, following Nick Graham's move to Wigan.

Widnes' loose forward, Simon Finnigan, will be out for six weeks after fracturing his elbow.
