Castleford are a step closer to having a new ground after getting the go-ahead for the redevelopment of the site of their present stadium.

The sale and replacement of The Jungle could have been held up by its proximity to an old chemical works, but the club have been told that there does not need to be a consultation process before it is used for new housing.

That should free funds for the proposed new stadium near the M62 at Glasshoughton, which Cas hope to be in by 2012 to strengthen their efforts to retain their Super League licence. "It was the one single factor that could derail our plans for the new stadium," said the Tigers' chief executive, Richard Wright.

Lee Briers has been given the Wales captaincy on his return to the international scene. The Warrington half-back has not been involved since standing down when Wales failed to qualify for the 2008 World Cup, but will lead them against Scotland in their first European Cup game in Glasgow on Sunday. Jordan James drops down to vice-captain.
