Batley gave Super League Huddersfield a scare in the Challenge Cup yesterday when they led 4-0 at half-time, playing down their famous slope at Mount Pleasant. The Giants came back at them after the break, but they did not sew up a 13-4 win until a late drop goal and penalty from Danny Brough.

Top-flight sides Warrington, Bradford, Hull and Salford had big wins – Salford running in 15 tries to beat Gloucestershire All Golds 82-6 – but the Catalan Dragons had Ian Henderson sent off before they dumped Hunslet out 50-12.

St Helens had Francis Meli sent off on the half-hour at Hull KR as Saints went out of the cup at the first hurdle for the first time in 18 years. Craig Hall, the victim of Meli's high tackle, scored two of Rovers' tries in a 26-18 win.

Kieron Dixon maintained his prolific try-scoring form with two in the London Broncos' 28-12 win over Featherstone. Last year's beaten finalists, Leeds, flirted with disaster when they trailed to a Castleford side for whom Rangi Chase scored one try and created another. Two late tries from Danny McGuire saw them to a 28-12 victory.

Favourites Wigan thrashed their neighbours Leigh 60-10. Sam Tomkins scored four tries, Josh Charnley three and Pat Richards another three."I don't like losing, but I'm proud of their effort," said the Championship club's coach Paul Rowley.

The same could not be said by Widnes' Denis Betts. The Vikings struggled against Doncaster but got home 42-28 with a hat-trick from 19-year-old Adam Lawton. "I'm embarrassed and so are the players at what we served up," Betts said.
