Leigh top after 13-try romp

Leigh leapt from third to first in the Northern Ford Premiership on points difference after Simon Baldwin scored four tries in a crushing 68-12 win over Hunslet.

The Centurions crossed the line 13 times with new signings Jon Roper and Rob Ball notching two tries apiece and Neil Turley finishing with 16 points from a try and six goals.

Hull KR continued to match the early pace beating Oldham 26-10 at Craven Park, but were edged off top spot by the margin of Leigh's victory.

It was Oldham's first match of the season, but tries from Dave Luckwell, Bob Everitt, Andy Smith and Lynton Stott settled the issue after an even first half ended 4-3 in Hull's favour.

Chorley ended their 15-game losing streak by defeating previously unbeaten Whitehaven 20-16 at Victory Park. Centre Dale Cardoza touched down in the seventh minute and there were further tries for John Duffy and Alan Reddicliffe. Liam Jones converted all three to give Lynx an 18-6 interval advantage.

Whitehaven, second behind Hull KR going into the match, dominated after the break with substitute Gary Smith and David Seeds touching down – Seeds also scoring in the first half. But Chorley held out and a Jones penalty calmed the nerves of the Lancashire side's long-suffering fans.

Rochdale also kept up their perfect start to the season by beating Swinton 22-18 at home. Richard Pachniuk grabbed their first try with Richard Agar and Marlon Billy also touching down for the Hornets.

Workington moved up to third with an excellent 58-18 win over Keighley, Jamie Beaumont scoring four tries for the Cumbrians.

The contest had been close at the interval with Town only leading 18-12, but they forged well ahead of the Cougars after the break with Carl Sice, Tani Manihera, Graeme Lewthwaite, Alan Bone and Stuart Hoyles all crossing the Keighley line.

Manihera also added eight goals to see off the Cougars, whose tries came from Steve Pickles, Oliver Wilkes and Jason Ramshaw.

Barrow claimed a 31-21 away victory over Dewsbury, an injury-time converted try by substitute Geoff Luxon putting the seal on the win.

Huddersfield's 30-10 victory over Sheffield made it two wins out of two for the side relegated from Super League last season. The former Sheffield players Chris Thorman and Ben Cooper were among the scorers at the McAlpine Stadium as the Giants maintained their 100 per cent start to the season.

Gateshead and Featherstone fought out the only draw so far in the Premiership with a 12-12 deadlock in the north-east.

Batley claimed their first victory with a 22-18 comeback triumph over rock-bottom York. The Bulldogs had to dig in after trailing 12-8 at the interval but tries from Ryan Horsley and Paul Gleadhill helped them recover.
