The Wigan coach, Brian Noble, is refusing to say whether the country's leading try-scorer will play this weekend.
Shaun Ainscough has been included in the squad to face St Helens tomorrow, but Noble said yesterday he might leave him out. The 19-year-old winger was omitted against Wakefield last week, but drafted in as a last-minute replacement. He scored four tries to make it 17 in his debut season.
"He did well last week, but we have a duty of care to players," Noble said. "He may or may not play this weekend."
Ainscough could face the Test winger Ade Gardner and Saints' coach, Mick Potter, has said he will be tested out under kicks – though there could be an element of double bluff in that.
