Round-up: McNamara denies he will be switching codes to coach Bath

The England coach, Steve McNamara, has rejected reports he is joining rugby union side Bath. Club sources say that McNamara is the man Bath want as their new attacking coach.

"I've been to Mike Ford's [the Bath coach] sessions and he has been to mine, so maybe that's where it comes from," he said. "I've got a big enough job on my plate." McNamara is in Australia on a fact-finding trip for this autumn's RL World Cup.

There was a riot of point-scoring at Widnes, where Leeds built a big early lead before winning 52-36. Joel Moon, Liam Sutcliffe and Rob Burrow got two tries each and Kevin Brown three in a losing cause.

Salford lifted themselves off the foot of the table with a 44-30 win at London Broncos. Jamie Soward scored a try and five goals on his Broncos debut, but they were outgunned by the City Reds, for whom Lee Gaskell claimed three tries and Jodie Broughton two.

At the top of Super League Wigan's lead was cut to a single point as they went down to a shock home defeat by Castleford. The Tigers won 18-4, with winger Kirk Dixon contributing a try and three goals.

That made it a losing debut for the former Wales rugby union international Andy Powell who was drafted in ahead of schedule because of an injury crisis in the Wigan front row.

The other Powell, Cas coach Daryl, said that after a result like that it was still possible for his team to make the play-offs.

Second-placed Huddersfield took full advantage with a thumping 60-16 win over the Catalan Dragons. Brett Ferres and Jermaine McGillvary both scored hat-tricks, but their coach, Paul Anderson, was unimpressed with some ragged aspects of the Giants' play.

The feeling that this is going to be a non-vintage season for St Helens increased with a 24-12 home defeat to in-form Hull KR. Travis Burns, Alex Brown and Greg Eden gave the Robins a 16-point lead they never looked like surrendering.
