Sampson seeks positive exit

The banned Castleford prop, Dean Sampson, is determined to get back into the team in time to bring the curtain down on his long career. Sampson was suspended for six matches for striking Wigan's Adrian Lam with his forearm, which leaves him with just three matches – plus any possible play-offs – before retirement.

"It would be nice to go out on a positive note, to leave the fans with some good memories of what I've done for the club," said the 35-year-old, who still believes he was harshly dealt with. "If it had been anyone else, he would have got two or three matches," he said.

Wakefield have delayed naming their new coach, with their caretaker, Shane McNally, looking more likely to get the job. McNally was in charge for the 22-22 draw with Widnes on Sunday, following the sacking of Peter Roe, and is likely to still be at the helm for this Sunday's game at London Broncos. "We were pleased with the performance under Shane's leadership and we are not going to rush into a decision," the club's spokesman, Diane Rogerson, said.

London will have Jim Dymock back for Sunday's game, after he missed last weekend's defeat at St Helens when his wife was in labour.

The Bradford chairman, Chris Caisley, has called for selective local black-outs of Sky TV's coverage of Super League to persuade more fans to watch games live, rather than at home or in the pub. "Something's got to change, because not enough people are going to rugby league games," Caisley, whose own club has suffered from declining attendances, said.

St Helens have had talks with Rochdale Hornets' back-rower, Paul Smith, as a possible signing for next season.
