Leeds, who scored nine tries at the Galpharm Stadium, were rarely troubled by the former club of their coach, Tony Smith. and were in front after a minute as their prolific winger Mark Calderwood crossed for a try.

Chev Walker, Chris McKenna and Richie Mathers went on to claim two tries each and there were further scores for Rob Burrow and Jamie Jones-Buchanan. The Rhinos captain, Kevin Sinfield, kicked 18 points.

Wigan came from 20-12 down with 16 minutes left to beat Widnes 30-12 at the Halton Stadium. Tries from Stephen Rowlands, Simon Finnigan and Andrew Emilio gave the Vikings hope of an upset, but the Warriors hit back with two tries from Kevin Brown and one from the Great Britain hooker Terry Newton. Bob Beswick and Martin Aspinwall had earlier crossed the line for Denis Betts' side.

Leigh remain the only club without a point after their battling defeat at the hands of Wakefield.

The Centurions went down 38-26 at the Atlantic Solutions Stadium (formerly known as Belle Vue). The promoted side were in contention throughout and were only killed off after Darren Fleary was sent to the sin-bin in the 58th minute. With Fleary off the field Ben Jeffries went over for his second try and Julian O'Neill crossed soon after.

Sid Domic claimed two more for Wakefield with Sam Obst and Jason Demetriou also scoring. Leigh's tries came from Steve Maden, Neil Turley, Fleary and Mick Govin.
