Wigan thought the tackle had been completed when they held up Solomona just short of the line, but the Kiwi second rower stretched out a hand and planted the ball between the defenders' feet and, after an interminable delay, the video referee allowed the match-winning try to stand.

Wigan had handled the ball impressively when Wayne Godwin, Danny Orr and Harrison Hansen all did well to set up Dennis Moran for the game's first try.

Wakefield's reply was an equally handsome try. Sam Obst's reverse pass sent Colum Halpenny through a gap and Kris Radlinski was left rooted to the spot by a lovely late sidestep.

The same combination struck again three minutes later, after Ben Jeffries began the attack. Solomona's quick play-the-ball allowed Obst to get away, and he drew the defenders before sending Halpenny over for his second try, again converted by David March.

Wigan were level on the half-hour when Moran kicked through and Orr got to the ball to be credited with the try, even though it looked as though he had lost control.

But then Solomona wrestled his way out of a three-man tackle to get the ball out. Stephen Wild got a hand to it for Wigan, but the alert Obst was there to pick up and score.

Both sides went close before Solomona's superb offload sent Jeffries speeding away for a 40-metre try at the start of the second half.

Moran brought Wigan back into it by intercepting from Jeffries for a spectacular try when Wakefield had looked set to make the game safe at the other end.

Wigan regained the lead when Orr tipped ahead and Danny Pickle pounced on the loose ball. Two minutes later Moran kicked across field with pinpoint accuracy for Orr to score his second.

Solomona's freakish ability to pass out of the tackle gave Rob Spicer the try that made it level once more and neither side could break the deadlock with a drop goal before Solomona decided it.
