Robbie Ward scored a debut try as Leeds bounced back from their Magic Weekend disappointment with a 20-6 victory over Hull.

The Super League leaders were humbled by a young Wigan side last weekend but got back to winning ways against a lacklustre Hull outfit.

Joel Moon's scrappy try was the sole effort in a first half to forget at a rain-sodden Headingley Carnegie. Moon touched down in the corner after the ball had come free from Ryan Hall's grasp as Leeds attacked the short side on the last tackle.

Brad Singleton's try gave Leeds some breathing space before 18-year-old hooker Ward went over to the delight of the home crowd, pouncing on an error from Kirk Yeaman.

Shaul touched down in the last minute to give the travelling Hull supporters something to cheer after receiving a pass from a juggling Fetuli Talanoa but it was little more than a consolation for the Airlie Birds as they reflected on a fourth straight defeat.

In the night's other game, skipper Paul Wellens led from the front as St Helens responded to his verbal broadside with a dominant performance to end Huddersfield's five-match winning run in the Super League.

Wellens had labelled his side's 41-24 derby defeat by Warrington an "embarrassment" while coach Nathan Brown questioned his players' attitude but both men will be delighted with the way they bounced back to record a 41-22 victory over the Giants at Langtree Park.

Wellens was among the tryscorers on his record-equalling 419th Super League appearance as he turned the clock back by reclaiming his old full-back spot in the absence of the injured Jonny Lomax, one of seven regulars missing from the Saints line-up.
