Warriors wobble without Farrell

Wigan were almost made to pay for resting Andy Farrell yesterday but ultimately emerged victorious 30-18 over a struggling, but stubborn, Wakefield at the JJB Stadium.

The Warriors might have been made to pay if Gareth Ellis had not missed a clear chance, dropping the ball with the line in sight midway through the second half when Wigan were on the ropes.

Wigan ran in three early tries but by half-time the lead was down to 16-8. Danny Tickle set up the Warriors' opener for Brian Carney with a slick inside pass, and Kris Radlinski and Jamie Ainscough also went over. But Trinity hit back with Neil Law touching down and Ian Knott landing his second goal of the half.

Wigan struck again when Paul Johnson scored after Carney's break but the Wildcats recovered with tries from Moana and David Marc, before Adrian Lam and then Carney scored to seal Wigan's win.

Elsewhere, Hull beat Halifax 40-22 at The Boulevard after a slow start. Shane McMenemy scored twice early on to put Halifax 10-0 ahead. However, the home side fought back through the boot of Matt Crowther and scores from Toa Kohe-Love and Craig Greenhill to lead 14-10 at the break.

Tries from Steve Prescott, Kirk Yeaman and a second from Crowther stretched Hull's lead. Lee Greenwood and Jamie Bloem added two late tries for Halifax before further scores by Paul Parker and a second for Yeaman for Hull.
