Wigan rout the Crusaders on a weekend when minnows are put to the sword

Sam Tomkins scored six tries, out of 18 by his team, as Wigan beat the North Wales Crusaders 98-4 in the Challenge Cup fourth round yesterday. The England full-back improved on his debut for Wigan in a 2008 fifth-round match against Whitehaven, when he scored five times.

Huddersfield came from 14-0 down to sweep aside injury-hit Hull with a dominant second-half at the KC Stadium. The Giants' outside backs did the damage, scoring six of their team's eight tries in a 42-16 win. The pick of the tries was an 80-metre individual effort from Leroy Cudjoe that put the Giants in front for the first time, on 54 minutes.

The London Broncos coach, Rob Powell, said he was aiming for a Challenge Cup run after a 72-4, 13-try home win over Dewsbury. Powell said: "It has been a long time since this club had a good cup run. With the Challenge Cup you get a couple of wins and suddenly you are in the semi-finals. We had nine Londoners out there today and they know what a good run would mean to the club."

There were six tries in the first half, with Antonio Kaufusi, Kieran Dixon (twice), Chad Randall, Dan Sarginson and Luke Dorn ending the game as a contest. The Broncos kept their foot on the gas after the interval, Michael Witt and Jamie O'Callaghan scoring two tries each and Chris Bailey, Kaufusi and Matt Cook rounding off the home scoring. Jamaine Akaidere scored for Dewsbury, just after the hour.

In yesterday's other fourth-round games, the Catalan Dragons won 20-18 at Hull KR; Warrington won 44-18 at Keighley; Sheffield beat York 50-12; Elliott Whitehead scored a hat-trick as Bradford beat Doncaster 72-6; Batley beat Hunslet 21-18; Oldham beat Barrow 26-14; Marc Sneyd scored 26 of Salford's points in a 58-18 win at Whitehaven; and Leigh beat Rochdale 68-18.

Saturday's key result, standing out among the hammerings handed out to lower-division teams, was Featherstone Rovers' 23-16 giant-killing of Castleford in a ferocious derby at Post Office Road. The Championship team outscored their Super League opponents by four tries to three. Saturday also saw Halifax beat South Wales 84-28, Swinton beat Gateshead 70-10 and St Helens hold off a late rally from Widnes to win a thriller 40-38.
