Wigan are 80 minutes away from another Grand Final after justifying their tag of title favourites in a one-sided play-off tie against Huddersfield.

Wigan ran in 10 tries in their biggest ever play-off win. Josh Charnley went over twice and Joel Tomkins scored his first since returning from union.

The Warriors’ reward is a home tie in the semi-finals while Huddersfield must regroup ahead of their sudden-death tie next week after a 10th defeat in 13 play-offs.

Wigan were marshalled superbly by half-backs Blake Green and Matty Smith, who amassed 21 points.

Huddersfield hung on grimly until Wigan snatched four tries in a devastating 13-minute spell. Matt Bowen’s brilliant cut-out pass got Charnley over. Then Smith burst through Shaun Lunt for a solo score. Next he put Tony Clubb through a gap.

A long-range try fashioned by the left-wing pairing of Dan Sarginson and Burgess was finished by Liam Farrell.

Giants scored the first try of the second half but then the visitors were hit by four more tries in a 12-minute spell.

Smith’s half-break enabled Tomkins to power over before Sarginson took a return pass from Burgess to score. The Giants were then hit by a 70-metre try from Bowen, fashioned by Green and Eddy Pettybourne, before Charnley ran in his second try.

Captain Sean O’Loughlin juggled with Green’s pass to touch down and Burgess went the full length of the pitch.
